Hidden Tunnels Beneath Milan’s Sforza Castle May Be Linked to Leonardo da Vinci

Beneath the ancient Sforza Castle, researchers from the Polytechnic University of Milan have discovered a novel discovery: secret tunnels that might have been created by Leonardo da Vinci himself. The medieval history of Milan and the military advancements of the fifteenth century are illuminated by these recently discovered passages.

Using advanced technology such as ground-penetrating radar, GPS mapping, and laser scanning, the research team identified a previously unknown tunnel system. Historical sketches from 1495 suggest that da Vinci, who worked closely with Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, may have designed these passageways for military defense. As an accomplished engineer and architect, da Vinci was known for his expertise in fortifications, and his influence is evident in the existing defensive structures of the castle.

The discovery initially began as an effort to digitize known tunnels beneath the Ghirlanda, an outer defensive wall. However, researchers were astonished to find a second tunnel running parallel to the existing passageways, buried just three feet below the surface. It is believed that soldiers may have used this hidden route to protect and reclaim the Ghirlanda during sieges. Additional tunnels, constructed with brick and featuring barrel-vaulted ceilings, were also uncovered, hinting at a more extensive underground network than previously imagined.

One passage appears to extend toward the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Ludovico Sforza’s wife is buried. Historians speculate that this tunnel might have provided the duke with private access to her tomb, though further research is needed to confirm this theory.
