BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, expressing doubts over the arrest and the investigation process.
However, the ruling Trinamool Congress has urged against the politicisation of the issue. Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s National General Secretary, has advocated for a mechanism that ensures a speedy trial in cases of heinous crimes, stating, “The accused should either be given capital punishment (hanged till death) or encountered. These people don’t deserve a place in society.”
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also addressed the incident, labelling it as “unfortunate and despicable.” She assured the victim’s family of proper action and stated that the case would be taken to a fast-track court. Banerjee further expressed that while she is not in favour of capital punishment, the strictest penalty should be applied to the accused if found guilty.
