3 Iconic Shops of Kolkata in the “World’s Most Legendary Desserts Places.”

Taste Atlas, the Travel online guide’s ‘150 most legendary dessert places’ in the world has picked up three heritage Kolkata eateries in the top 50 on a global favourites list for sweets. These are Roshogollas from K C Das, rumballs from Flurys, Saandesh from Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick.

 While talking about Kolkata, traditional sweets and desserts rank a special place in Kolkata’s culinary scene and sweets are a quintessential part of Kolkata’s food culture. From Bengali mishti like rosogolla and sandesh, to confections like cakes and pastries, Kolkata is known for its sweet offerings.

The three names of sweets that instantly comes to our mind while talking about the desserts of Kolkata are roshogolla, sandesh and chom chom. Adding a new feather to an already adorned crown, if we may say so, three shops of Kolkata have made it to the popular global food list by Taste Atlas.

K.C. Das

K.C. Das Grandson Pvt Ltd is a beloved sweet joint located in the heart of esplanade Kolkata. It is a very famous sweet joint for originating the world-famous Roshogollas and offers other varieties including Gulab jamun, Nolen Gur,and Langcha. The luscious roshogollas have always made a way straight to the heart of millions of sweet lovers not only in Bengal or India but across the world. The famous British Chef William Harold described it as – “a bowl of sweet, syrupy, soft cheese balls.”Roshogolla was 25th on the list.

Flurys

Be it a romantic  date, a business lunch or an adda with friends or having featured in films like Jana Aranya of Satyajit Ray and Pratidwandi to the 2021 film Lost, the tea room of Kolkata has always been the best and perhaps the most suitable place for the meet-ups.

Flurys, a prominent confectiionary was set up at the Park street by a Swiss couple Mr. and Mrs.J. Flury in1927 and offered a range of European confections. It gained popularity very soon among the British and other affluent Indians. Among its extensive menu of pastries and desserts, Flurysis particularly famous for its rum balls, a delightful combination of chocolate sponge cake, cocoa, and rum,” Taste Atlas noted. Flurys, was 26th on the list.

Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick

Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick, a legendary sweet shop in Kolkata famous for its traditional Bengali sweets especially Sandesh, was 37thon the list. Balaram has always been known for its sandesh, their signature sweet. Along with their sandesh, the chain is also known for sweets like aam doi, Blueberry sandesh, baked roshogollas among others. The team is happy and thrilled at the ranking in Taste Atlas.

Many other Indian legendary sweet shops and confectionaries have also found themselves on the list from different cities such as Pune’s Kayani bakery, Hyderabad’s Karachi Bakery and Mumbai’s K Rustom and Company.
