In a groundbreaking moment for Maharashtra, Sujata Saunik has been appointed as the state’s first female Chief Secretary. Saunik, an IAS officer of the 1987 batch, took over from her predecessor Nitin Kareer at Mantralaya, marking the end of a 64-year-long wait for a woman to hold this esteemed position. Saunik’s appointment, which was cleared by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, signifies a significant milestone in the state’s administrative history.

Sujata Saunik, who is set to retire in June next year, was previously serving as the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) of the home and general administration departments. Her journey to becoming the Chief Secretary has been one of resilience and perseverance. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Saunik reflected on the significance of her appointment, acknowledging the numerous deserving female IAS officers who were overlooked for the role in the past. “The significance of this moment is not lost on me,” she said. “However, at this point, I would like to remember all the lady IAS officers who were very deserving of the chief secretary’s post but were not considered for various reasons. I am grateful for this opportunity and I will do my best.”

The path to Saunik’s appointment was not without its challenges. She was the senior IAS officer in April 2023 and seemed poised to take on the role of Chief Secretary at that time. However, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chose to appoint her husband, Manoj Saunik, instead. She was overlooked once more in January this year when Nitin Kareer was appointed as Chief Secretary. Despite these setbacks, Saunik’s dedication and capability could not be denied, and she was finally appointed to the role this year, fulfilling a promise made by the government as Kareer’s term came to an end.

The appointment of Sujata Saunik as Maharashtra’s first female Chief Secretary is a momentous occasion, not just for her but for the many women who aspire to high-ranking positions in government. Her appointment was celebrated by her peers, with at least half a dozen female IAS officers attending the function where she took charge. Saunik’s career is a testament to her commitment and excellence in public service. She began her career as an assistant collector in Aurangabad, served as the collector of Jalgaon, and was the municipal commissioner of Nashik. She has also held significant positions in the central government and on foreign postings, demonstrating her versatility and competence across various administrative roles.

Sujata Saunik’s family background is steeped in public service. Her father, C D Cheema, was an IAS officer who served as the Election Commissioner of Punjab post-retirement. Her husband, Manoj Saunik, also served in the IAS. Her brother, Gautam Cheema, is an additional DG in the Punjab police, and her family includes several other distinguished bureaucrats.

In Mantralaya, Saunik has headed several crucial departments, including health, administrative reforms, skill development, and general administration. Her extensive experience and dedication to public service make her well-equipped to lead Maharashtra’s administration effectively.

Sujata Saunik’s appointment as Maharashtra’s first female Chief Secretary is a historic milestone. It not only breaks a long-standing gender barrier but also sets a precedent for future appointments. Saunik’s journey and achievements will inspire many, marking the beginning of a new era in Maharashtra’s governance.
