With a grueling 3-1 victory over Hong Kong on Friday, Manchester United concluded its tumultuous postseason trip, but the victory did little to quell mounting rumors about two of the team’s most significant players, Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho.
Juninho Strikes First, But Young Red Devils Rally
Playing in front of a packed crowd, it was Hong Kong who stunned the visitors early, taking the lead in the 20th minute through former Rangers winger Juninho. The home crowd roared as United’s sluggish start continued, echoing the frustration that followed their 1-0 loss to the ASEAN All-Stars just two days earlier in Kuala Lumpur — a match that ended with boos ringing in the air.
United, however, turned things around after halftime. Rising talent Chido Obi leveled the score shortly after the break and then doubled his tally in the 82nd minute, showing composure and hunger in the box. Ayden Heaven added gloss to the scoreline in stoppage time with a third goal that sealed the win.
Transfer Turmoil Looms Large
The shadow of uncertainty over Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho continues to grow. Multiple sources, including ESPN, report that Al Hilal are keen on bringing Fernandes to the Saudi Pro League, possibly before the Club World Cup next month. Despite Manchester United’s public stance that the Portuguese captain is not for sale, insiders believe a mega offer could tempt the club.
Rumors from Old Trafford, meanwhile, indicate that Garnacho might be leaving this summer. Numerous clubs in Europe are keeping a close eye on the young Argentine, who has grown to be a fan favorite.
A victory, but no clear path
Although United’s victory over Hong Kong temporarily raises spirits, the larger concerns about the team’s future remain. Before the 2025–26 season begins, new manager Ruben Amorim has work to do because of the uninspiring performances on the field and the uncertainty that is growing off it.
Old Trafford will continue to be the center of attention as the summer transfer market heats up, not only for new players but also maybe for two high-profile departures.
