The Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024 has marked a decisive victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in the Mahayuti coalition, as they powered past the majority mark with a dominant performance. The alliance has solidified its position as the leading political force in the state, crossing the 100-seat milestone, signalling widespread voter support across urban and rural areas.
A Commanding Mandate for BJP and Allies
The BJP’s remarkable performance, crossing 100 seats on its own, reflects its stronghold in Maharashtra. Together with the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde and other allies within the Mahayuti coalition, the alliance has exceeded the halfway mark of 145 seats in the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. This triumph ensures not only political stability for the state but also reaffirms the BJP’s position as a dominant player in India’s western region.
Voters seem to have responded favorably to the campaign’s heavy emphasis on development, economic changes, and welfare programs. With loud rallies and roadshows, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah played a crucial role in igniting the BJP’s campaign. The coalition’s achievement was also greatly aided by the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

On the opposition front, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Congress, faced a challenging battle. Despite their combined efforts, the MVA could not counter the organisational strength and voter outreach of the BJP-led alliance.
Urban and Rural Voter Support
The Mahayuti coalition’s ability to connect with both urban and rural voters was instrumental in their victory. Urban centres like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur saw the BJP consolidating its position due to its focus on infrastructure projects, smart city initiatives, and job creation. In rural areas, welfare schemes such as the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi and initiatives targeting farmers and women strengthened the coalition’s appeal.
