Kolkata (The city of joy) will be written in golden letters whenever there will be a talk on the rapid transit system in India. The under-water metro route is also home to the county’s deepest metro station – Howrah situated 33 metres below the surface. The metro covers the 520 metres stretch under the river Hooghly in just 45 seconds.
On Friday (15.02.2024) at 7am, with hundreds of passengers erupting into jubilation on their first ride with their cell phone cameras on video mode. Glued to the windows, prayers on their lips, they experienced their first journey under water as the train approached the under-river section marked by the blue LED lights.
The train began its journey from the Howrah Maidan station on the East-West metro corridor of Kolkata with cheers and claps from commuters while another started cruising from Esplanade station at the same time.
The twin cities Kolkata and Howrah are connected through bridges over the Hooghly river but now they are being linked beneath the river which is itself very exciting.
