More than 200 people on board IndiGo flight 6E2142 had a horrifying experience as their plane experienced extreme turbulence brought on by an unexpected hailstorm. Wednesday’s mid-flight incident on the Delhi-to-Srinagar flight sent shockwaves of dread through the cabin.
Children sobbing, passengers yelling, and lightning flashing just outside the windows as the jet trembled violently are all captured in a viral video taken inside the airplane. Because of the severity of the situation, the pilot had to notify Srinagar’s Air Traffic Control (ATC) of an emergency.
Around 6:30 PM, the aircraft carrying 227 passengers made a safe landing at Srinagar Airport, preventing a potentially disastrous outcome.
“While traveling from Delhi to Srinagar, IndiGo flight 6E 2142 ran into an unexpected hailstorm. The airline said in a statement that the aircraft landed safely because the pilot and cabin personnel adhered to established practice. It further stated that upon landing, passengers’ comfort and safety were swiftly attended to.
The impact of the hail caused only little damage to the aircraft’s nose. IndiGo confirmed that the aircraft would be inspected and serviced before approving its usage on subsequent flights.
Now widely shared on social media, the video is a sobering reminder of the unpredictable nature of aviation’s risks and the importance of emergency protocols and trained flight crews.
