Legendary Actor Manoj Kumar Passes Away at 87, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Patriotism and Cinema

Manoj Kumar, an 87-year-old veteran actor and filmmaker who was affectionately referred to as “Bharat Kumar” for his nationalistic films, died in Mumbai on Friday. After a lengthy battle with health concerns, he passed away at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. According to his son Kunal Goswami, who verified the information, he died quietly at around 3:30 AM.

Manoj Kumar’s mortal remains will be kept at his Juhu residence for admirers and loved ones to pay their last respects. His cremation is scheduled for Saturday at Pawan Hans Crematorium. The family waits for a few relatives to arrive abroad before performing the final rites. His wife, who is also unwell, survives him along with his sons.

Known for films like Purab Aur Paschim, Kranti, and Roti, Kapada Aur Makaan, Manoj Kumar was a celebrated figure in Indian cinema. His deep love for the country is reflected in his films, earning him a special place in the hearts of millions. His remarkable contributions to Indian cinema were recognized with multiple honors, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015.

Tributes have poured in from across the nation, including from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised him for igniting a spirit of nationalism through his films. Akshay Kumar, filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, and many others from the film industry also mourned his passing, recalling his warmth, wisdom, and dedication to cinema.

Born as Harikrishan Giri Goswami in Abbottabad (now in Pakistan) in 1937, Manoj Kumar moved to India during Partition. His journey in Bollywood began in 1957 with Fashion, but it was Kanch Ki Gudiya that marked his breakthrough. Besides acting, he also directed timeless classics like Upkar, Shor, and Jai Hind.

Manoj Kumar’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian cinema. His films and contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.
