Why Rishabh Pant Missed Out on ODI Captaincy: Inside BCCI’s Stand on KL Rahul’s Surprise Appointment

001

When India’s ODI squad for the South Africa series was announced, social media buzzed with one big question: Why wasn’t Rishabh Pant named captain in Shubman Gill’s absence? After all, Pant is currently leading India in the second Test and has been viewed as a future all-format leader. But a senior BCCI source has now revealed why the selectors decided to hand the reins to KL Rahul instead.

The India–South Africa ODI series begins on November 30 in Ranchi, with both regular captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer unavailable. While many expected Pant—Gill’s Test deputy—to take over the limited-overs leadership, the selectors took a different route.

Why Pant Was Not Considered

According to a BCCI source speaking to PTI, Pant was never in serious contention for this particular series.
The reason? Lack of recent ODI game time.

Pant has played only one ODI in the last 12 months, and the selectors reportedly want to rely on someone with consistent 50-over experience for a short, high-pressure tour.

The source clarified:

“Rahul’s captaincy is a one-off and should be seen in isolation. Rishabh wasn’t considered because he has played only one ODI game in the last year. The selectors expect Shubman Gill to return against New Zealand in January 2026.”

So, Rahul’s leadership is temporary, chosen purely for continuity and stability.

Gaikwad’s Return After Stellar A-Team Performances

Another major takeaway from the squad announcement is the return of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who smashed a century and a half-century in the unofficial ODIs against South Africa A. His form made it impossible for selectors to overlook him, especially with Gill recovering from a neck injury.

A key question now is whether Gaikwad will partner Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top or play as a backup opener.

Tilak Varma Earns His Place Back

Young talent Tilak Varma also makes a comeback to the ODI setup. With Shreyas Iyer unavailable, Tilak is expected to step in at No. 4—an opportunity that could define his role in India’s near-future white-ball plans.

Final Word

The selectors’ move may have surprised fans, but their reasoning is consistent with long-term planning. Pant’s leadership future remains bright in Tests and T20Is, but for this series, India is banking on Rahul’s experience and stability.
