Trump Warns 10% Tariff Hike on Nations Aligning with BRICS, Escalating Global Trade Tensions

In a sharp escalation of his economic stance, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that countries aligning themselves with what he called the “anti-American policies” of BRICS will face an additional 10% tariff on all trade with the United States.

“Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff. There will be no exceptions to this policy,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his preferred communication platform.

This warning comes as world leaders convene in Brazil for the 17th BRICS Summit, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and leaders from other member countries — Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa. The summit, expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, represents a rapidly growing economic coalition that seeks to challenge Western dominance in global finance and trade.

While Trump didn’t elaborate on what qualifies as “anti-American policies,” his remarks follow increasing criticism from BRICS leaders over Washington’s “indiscriminate tariff practices” and unilateralism in global trade.

U.S. Tariff Letters to Go Out July 7

In a follow-up post, Trump announced that formal tariff notifications will be sent out beginning Monday, July 7, 2025, at 12:00 PM (Eastern).

“The UNITED STATES TARIFF Letters, and/or Deals, with various Countries from around the World, will be delivered starting 12:00 PM Monday,” he declared.

Trump has been vocal in recent months about reshaping global trade through what he calls “fairer bilateral deals”, repeatedly threatening both allies and adversaries with punitive duties unless they comply by August 1.

BRICS Reacts Cautiously

Although BRICS leaders at the summit openly criticized protectionist policies and trade barriers, the final summit declaration avoided naming the U.S. or Trump directly, reflecting a cautious diplomatic approach amid rising global economic uncertainty.

Trump’s latest warning, however, is expected to trigger heightened anxiety among U.S. trading partners, especially those actively participating in or seeking closer ties with the BRICS bloc.

What This Means for Global Trade

  • Increased pressure on nations to choose between U.S. and BRICS-led trade blocs
  • Potential market volatility ahead of the August 1 deadline
  • Risk of retaliatory measures from BRICS members

As the geopolitical chessboard tilts toward multi-polar alliances, the Trump administration’s tariffs could significantly reshape global supply chains and force countries to recalibrate their strategic economic alignments.
