In a heart-wrenching incident that has left the entire nation in mourning, Air India flight AI-171 crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The tragic crash, fueled by over 1.25 lakh litres of aviation fuel, led to an intense fire that made rescue nearly impossible.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited the crash site and the hospital where victims were taken, confirmed the grim details. “The temperature due to burning fuel was so high that there was no chance to save anyone,” he said during a press briefing in Ahmedabad. Shah was accompanied by Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, as the central and state governments launched immediate joint relief operations.
Massive Fire and Immediate Response
The aircraft caught fire shortly after takeoff, causing an explosion so intense that it incinerated large sections of the fuselage. Officials from the Gujarat Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) have been deployed to expedite DNA identification, a necessary step due to the condition of the victims’ remains.
Shah confirmed that the DNA sampling process for the relatives present would be completed within hours. For families residing abroad, arrangements have already been made to collect samples upon their arrival.
Only One Survivor in a Scene of Devastation
Despite the massive devastation, one passenger miraculously survived. Shah, who personally met the survivor, said, “It was an accident, and no one can stop accidents. But today, all departments showed their alertness and coordination under pressure.”
The Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), Fire Brigade, Police, Health Department, and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) worked together to provide immediate relief. Shah also assured that trauma care and mental health support are being arranged for the affected families.
Relief Measures and Rescue Operations
In addition to emergency support, the Western Railway has stepped in to ease the travel woes caused by flight cancellations. Two special trains were dispatched on Thursday evening from Ahmedabad to Mumbai and Delhi. Another special train is scheduled to depart on June 13 from Mumbai Central at 11:10 a.m., arriving in Ahmedabad by 7:30 p.m. This effort aims to help stranded passengers and their families reach their destinations safely.
Condolences from the Nation
Expressing deep grief, Shah said, “The entire nation is shocked by the unfortunate incident involving Air India flight AI-171. On behalf of the Government of India, the Gujarat government, and Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I express heartfelt condolences to all those who lost their lives.”
Conclusion
This devastating incident has shaken the core of the Indian aviation sector. While a detailed investigation by the Ministry of Civil Aviation is underway, the focus remains on identifying the victims, supporting grieving families, and uncovering the cause behind the crash.
