This is especially true for two remarkable young cricketers from the Palnadu district, whose story is a testament to the power of determination. Despite their disabilities, they have proven that overcoming adversity is possible with sheer willpower. Cricket holds a special place in the hearts of Indians, and for these Deaf and Dumb cricket players, the sport has become a beacon of hope. Overcoming adversity was not just a necessity but a daily challenge. Raghu, from Yadlapadu, was born hearing impaired. His father, a lorry driver, struggled to make ends meet. Taunted by his peers, Raghu found solace and purpose in cricket. He joined a special school in Tirupati Devasthanam, where his talent was recognised. His journey from a small village to the state-level deaf team is a testament to his unwavering determination and passion for the sport.
Raghu’s story of overcoming adversity continued as he balanced a job at a garment shop in Vijayawada with his cricketing ambitions. Despite financial constraints, he practiced diligently and hid his local match prizes to participate in state-level competitions. His dedication paid off when he was selected for the special Ranji competition on behalf of Andhra Pradesh. In 2017, at the age of 22, Raghu not only made it to the state team but also became its captain. His leadership and performance, especially in the ICDA T20 match in Jammu and Kashmir, where he took two wickets for Andhra Pradesh, are remarkable achievements in his inspiring journey.
Siliveru Venu’s story is equally compelling. Hailing from Boppudi village, Venu faced rejection from a local school due to his disability. His parents, who ran a small tiffin centre, could only afford to send him to a special school until seventh grade. Despite these setbacks, Venu’s passion for cricket never waned. Overcoming adversity, he practised alone in the early mornings. His perseverance eventually earned him a place in the local team, leading to district, zone, and state-level opportunities.
Venu’s journey of overcoming adversity reached new heights when he was selected for the Andhra Pradesh team in the Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA) in 2018. His impressive performance in the IDCA National Cricket Championship, where he scored 53 runs off 79 balls, marked him as a player of note. Despite financial struggles, Venu’s talent shone through, earning him 21 Player of the Match awards in 60 matches. However, his dream of playing international cricket was hindered by the lack of funds, a hurdle he remains determined to overcome.
