Ooty Shivers Below Zero as Frost Transforms the Nilgiris into a Winter Wonderland

Ooty, the Queen of Hill Stations, has taken on an unusually wintry avatar as temperatures plunged below zero, turning parts of the Nilgiris into a scene reminiscent of North India’s snow towns. The hill town witnessed intense cold and widespread frost, prompting authorities to impose safety restrictions for tourists in sensitive areas.

According to reports, the Thalaikundha region recorded a chilling low of –1°C, while several surrounding locations hovered close to –0.1°C. The prolonged cold spell, now stretching over ten days, has resulted in heavy frost formation across gardens, roadsides, hills, and parked vehicles.

Daily life disrupted as frost tightens its grip

The extreme cold has disrupted normal life for residents, particularly during early morning hours when movement became difficult due to icy surfaces. Locals reported reduced visibility, numbness from biting winds, and challenges in routine travel across frost-covered roads.

Nilgiris turns white with frost

Iconic locations such as the Ooty Government Botanical Garden, Kanthal, and the Thalaikundha–Avalanche stretch were seen blanketed in frost, offering a rare visual spectacle. Vehicles parked overnight were coated in thick ice, surprising both locals and visitors.

Tourists, fascinated by the unusual weather, were seen collecting frost and playing with it—an uncommon sight in this southern hill station. Despite the harsh conditions, the cold wave has emerged as a major attraction.

Tourist surge amid sub-zero temperatures

Thousands of tourists continue to arrive daily in Thalaikundha from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and other neighbouring states. Many said they travelled long distances specifically to witness the rare sub-zero temperatures and frost-covered landscapes.

However, authorities have urged caution, advising visitors to avoid risky areas and follow safety guidelines strictly.

Forest Department restricts access near Kamaraj Sagar Dam

Amid the freezing conditions, the Forest Department banned tourist entry into the plains near the Kamaraj Sagar (Sagar) Dam, citing safety concerns due to slippery terrain and icy conditions. Visitors who had planned to explore the scenic dam area were stopped and asked to observe from a safe distance.

Several tourists who arrived as early as midnight were seen standing along roadsides, capturing photos and videos from afar. One visitor described the experience as “freezing beyond words,” adding that even speaking was difficult due to the cold, but the beauty made the trip worthwhile.

A rare winter moment for Ooty

While the cold wave has posed challenges for locals and authorities, it has also transformed Ooty into a winter wonderland—briefly blurring the lines between southern hill stations and Himalayan landscapes.

As temperatures remain low, officials continue to monitor conditions, urging tourists to prioritise safety while enjoying nature’s rare spectacle.
