New Twist in Atlantic Showdown: Three Indians Reportedly Among Crew of US-Seized Russia-Linked Oil Tanker

001

New Delhi, January 10, 2026 — According to numerous international media outlets, three Indian citizens are allegedly part of the crew of a Russian-flagged oil tanker that the United States has captured in the North Atlantic, marking a sharp increase in maritime tensions.

Before being apprehended under a U.S. federal court order for allegedly breaking American sanctions, the ship—originally known as M/V Bella 1 and then renamed Marinera—was chased by the U.S. Coast Guard for over two weeks.

Multinational Crew Includes Indians

Russian state media and global outlets report that the tanker’s crew comprised 28 members, including 17 Ukrainians, six Georgians, three Indians and two Russians. The identities and current condition of the Indian crew members are yet to be confirmed by official Indian authorities.

The Government of India, through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), has said it is “closely following developments” and working to verify details about the reported Indian nationals aboard the vessel.

What Sparked the Seizure?

As part of a larger initiative to impose sanctions on ships connected to Iran, Venezuela, and Russia, the United States took action against the tanker. According to U.S. officials, the ship was a member of a “shadow fleet” that helps some countries avoid oil export prohibitions.

The U.S. Coast Guard executed the operation with assistance from the U.S. military, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice, and the United Kingdom, which provided vital logistical support.

Russia’s Powerful Response

Moscow has strongly denounced the capture, labeling it “piracy” in some political circles and declaring it unlawful under international maritime law. Detained crew members, particularly foreign nationals, must be treated humanely and allowed to return home as soon as possible, according to Russian officials.

Additionally, the Russian Ministry of Transport has claimed that at the time of the boarding, the ship was operating under a valid temporary Russian flag permission.

Ripple Effects in International Diplomacy

There have been many diplomatic responses to the seizure, ranging from discussions about the legitimacy of imposing unilateral penalties on the high seas to worries about crew safety. India has emphasized the significance of protecting its citizens and finding a peaceful settlement.
