Mumbai, Thane, June 10, 2025: Thirteen passengers jumped off a speeding local train in a horrifying accident on the Central Railway’s fast line near Mumbra, leaving the city in shock and resulting in four heartbreaking deaths and numerous injuries. A fresh eyewitness report and tangible evidence are changing the course of the investigation, which was initially thought to be caused by passengers’ baggage colliding as they crossed two rapid trains.
“It felt like we hit a wall,” according to eyewitness accounts.
In a startling revelation, one of the survivors claimed, “We felt like we hit something. Before we fell down, it felt like we hit a wall.” This comment has raised significant doubts about the initial theory and prompted railway officials to explore a more serious mechanical or structural fault.
Railway engineers conducting a detailed inspection found suspicious scratches on the last coach of the train, suggesting that the passengers may have come into contact with a metal object, possibly an iron rod, protruding from the side of the track or another source.
Track design and crowding are also being scrutinized.
According to another theory, the tragedy may have resulted from severe overcrowding. Commuters were reportedly standing on footboards, and the proximity of the two trains on opposite fast lines may have caused them to bump into each other. The Central Railway team has since measured the distance between the tracks, a crucial detail that could confirm whether the infrastructure itself is to blame.
Actual Situation on the Ground: Police and Political Response
Security has been tightened at Mumbra station, with RPF, GRPF, and local police deployed on Platform No. 4. Train services between Platforms 3 and 4 are moving cautiously due to the curve near the accident site.
This incident has sparked political outrage. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya is set to question Central Railway officials about the cause and responsibility of the incident. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has organized a Dhadak Morcha, with thousands of local commuters expected to join in a protest march from Gavdevi Maidan to Thane Railway Station.
The Issue of Public Safety
Both local authorities and commuters are calling for responsibility and prompt action to stop such situations from occurring in the future while the Central Railway conducts its inquiry. The Mumbra tragedy serves as a warning to Mumbai’s suburban rail system, regardless of whether the cause was a protruding iron rod, inadequate crowd control, or dangerous infrastructure.
