In Maharashtra, a 40-year-old man from Solapur succumbed to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), marking the state’s first reported death due to the condition. The man, who had visited Pune, is believed to have contracted the disease there. Meanwhile, GBS cases in Pune have surged past 100, with the outbreak largely concentrated in the Sinhgad area. The Union Health Ministry has deployed a team to address the alarming situation.

GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. Early symptoms, such as tingling sensations or weakness, often begin in the legs and may spread to the arms and face. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), some patients experience severe back or limb pain. In more extreme cases, GBS can lead to paralysis, respiratory difficulties, and even problems with speech or swallowing.

Prompt hospitalization is crucial, as symptoms can escalate within days or weeks, with the peak of weakness typically occurring in the first two weeks.

The state health department recommends preventive measures, including drinking boiled or bottled water, thoroughly washing produce, and avoiding raw or undercooked food. Maintaining kitchen hygiene and frequent handwashing are essential steps to reduce the risk of contracting GBS during outbreaks.
