From a Slow Start to a Surging Momentum at the Box Office So Far

Maa, which was released on June 27, made ₹4.65 crore on its first day of sales. But on Saturday, the movie gained momentum and made ₹6 crore in India, increasing the whole box office receipts to ₹10.30 crore.

On Day 2, the movie’s overall Hindi occupancy was 26.38%, according to Sacnilk:

9.94% in the morning, 26.87% in the afternoon, 30.26% in the evening, and 38.45% at night

Maa could do well on its first Sunday thanks to positive word-of-mouth and growing foot traffic, possibly surpassing important early benchmarks.

Plot Snapshot: Fear Meets Faith

Maa revolves around a haunting legend in a rural village where young girls mysteriously vanish. Kajol plays a protective mother who is drawn into a battle against an ancient demonic force. When her daughter becomes the next target, the mother channels the wrath of Goddess Kali, unleashing divine vengeance in a terrifying yet spiritual spectacle.

This fusion of mythology and horror gives Maa a unique edge in an era of genre experimentation in Indian cinema.

Star Power and Performances

Alongside Kajol, the film features a talented cast including:

Ronit Roy

Indraneil Sengupta

Jitin Gulati

Kherin Sharma

Their performances add emotional depth and tension to a storyline that bridges the supernatural and maternal instinct.

Critical Reception: Mixed Yet Intriguing

While Maa received mixed reviews from critics, it has piqued the interest of audiences with its unique genre blend. According to Moneycontrol, “The film tries to do something different by blending horror with mythology, but the result feels more like a creative idea than a fully formed genre experience. You wait for chills, but they rarely arrive.”

Despite that, viewers seem captivated by Kajol’s intense performance and the emotional undercurrents of a mother’s love clashing with evil.
