The BCCI announced late Tuesday night that Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah would not be participating in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 because of a lower back issue. The move, which had an impact on India’s bowling assault before the major competition, was made just before the deadline for final team alterations.
Bumrah’s Injury Woes
Bumrah sustained the injury during the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney last month. His back spasms forced him off the field, and subsequent scans confirmed the seriousness of the issue. Despite hopes of a return, BCCI quietly excluded him from the final ODI against England before officially announcing his absence from the Champions Trophy.
Harshit Rana and Chakaravarthy Join the Squad
To bolster the squad, 23-year-old Harshit Rana has been named as Bumrah’s replacement. Rana recently made his ODI debut against England, showing promise in the series. Additionally, Varun Chakaravarthy, who has been in sensational form, replaces Yashasvi Jaiswal. The mystery spinner impressed in T20Is and earned his maiden ODI cap in the England series.
India’s Champions Trophy Schedule
India begins its campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, followed by a highly anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23, and concludes the group stage against New Zealand on March 2. Due to security concerns, all of India’s matches will be played in Dubai.
