Indian Railways is taking a major step toward sustainable transportation by developing the country’s first hydrogen-powered train. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, stated that the train would be among the longest and most powerful hydrogen trains globally.
A hydrogen fuel cell is installed on a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) rake as part of a test project. The Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) created the train’s specifications and design in-house, demonstrating India’s dedication to green energy innovation.
Indian Railways is constructing an integrated hydrogen production, storage, and refueling plant in addition to the train itself. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) has previously granted this infrastructure the required safety clearances.
This ambitious project underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to cleaner energy solutions and sustainable transportation. By pioneering hydrogen-powered rail technology, India aims to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, paving the way for a greener future in railway travel.
