Manashimaya
Guru Purnima, a revered Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist festival, is a day dedicated to expressing gratitude and reverence towards one’s teachers, or “gurus.” In 2024, Guru Purnima is celebrated today, i.e. on the 21st of July. Various rituals and ceremonies mark this auspicious day, all aimed at honouring the individuals who impart wisdom and guidance in our lives.
Describe Guru Purnima.
On the full moon day or Purnima, in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July), people celebrate Guru Purnima. The Sanskrit words “Gu,” which means darkness, and “Ru,” which means remover, are the roots of the word “Guru.” Thus, one who illuminates the path of wisdom and drives out the darkness of ignorance is a guru.
The event honors gurus who have a significant influence on our lives and has great spiritual meaning. It is thought that on this day, the Saptarishis (the seven sages) received the teachings of yoga from Lord Shiva, the Adi Guru or the first guru. Guru Purnima is a Buddhist holiday that marks the day that Lord Buddha preached his first sermon at Sarnath following his enlightenment.
Why is Guru Purnima Celebrated?
