Golden Temple Marks Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti with Solemn Grandeur, No Fireworks This Year

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to forgo fireworks at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on the Parkash Purb (birth anniversary) of Guru Gobind Singh this year, choosing reverence and reflection over spectacle. The decision reflects the deep emotional and spiritual significance of the period, as the Sikh community simultaneously observes the martyrdom of the younger Sahibzadas.

Bhagwant Singh Dhangera, chief manager of the Golden Temple, stated that the move was taken to maintain the sanctity of the occasion. The martyrdom of Guru Gobind Singh’s younger sons, who laid down their lives at a tender age for faith and righteousness, calls for solemn remembrance rather than celebration marked by fireworks.

Despite the absence of fireworks, the Parkash Purb will be observed with traditional devotion and splendour. An akhand path (continuous recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib) will be performed, and the revered shrine will be beautifully illuminated in keeping with long-standing custom. Devotees will also witness the customary “Jalau”, a symbolic display of spiritual grandeur that underscores the timeless legacy of the tenth Sikh Guru.

Recently, the five Sikh high priests clarified that the Parkash Purb would be observed on its already scheduled date, while granting devotees the flexibility to mark the occasion a day before or after, depending on their sentiments and local traditions. This decision aims to balance religious uniformity with personal devotion.

Meanwhile, the long-standing debate surrounding the Nanakshahi Calendar has resurfaced once again. Amendments made in 2010 led to the unusual situation where the Parkash Purb of Guru Gobind Singh was observed twice in a single year, creating confusion among the Sikh diaspora. The issue continues to spark discussion within the community, highlighting the need for greater consensus on religious observances.

This year’s observance at the Golden Temple serves as a reminder that Sikh traditions place profound emphasis on sacrifice, humility, and spiritual reflection—values embodied by Guru Gobind Singh and his Sahibzadas.
