Delhi Endures Its Coldest Winter Morning Yet as Temperatures Sink Close to Freezing Point

002 3

Delhi residents were greeted by bone-chilling conditions on January 13 as the capital recorded its lowest temperatures of the season, turning the early hours into a test of endurance. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the thermometer at Safdarjung settled at 3.2°C, signalling the most intense cold spell experienced so far this winter.

Given the severity of the weather, the IMD placed the city under an orange alert, indicating that cold wave and severe cold wave conditions are likely to dominate the day across several neighbourhoods.

Sharp Temperature Dip Across Multiple Localities

The cold was widespread, though southern and western pockets of Delhi experienced the sharpest dip. Weather observations from different stations showed strikingly low overnight readings:

Lodhi Road: 3.0°C

Safdarjung: 3.2°C

Ayanagar: 3.2°C

Palam: 3.3°C

Ridge: 4.1°C

Jafarpur: 4.8°C

Meteorological standards define a cold wave in plains when night temperatures touch 4°C or fall well below seasonal averages, a threshold clearly crossed in much of the city.

Foggy Conditions Slow Morning Movement

The freezing temperatures were accompanied by thick fog in the early morning, severely affecting visibility. Several areas witnessed sluggish traffic and delays, with fog disrupting road travel, train schedules, and flight operations during peak hours.

Daytime Warmth Limited Despite Clear Skies

Although the night and morning remained harsh, partial relief is expected later in the day. Forecasts indicate that daytime temperatures may rise to around 20–21°C, with sunny and cloud-free skies offering temporary comfort.

Still, northwesterly winds at speeds of 5–10 kmph are likely to persist, enhancing the cold sensation and preventing a significant easing of winter conditions.

Pollution Levels Rise as Weather Stagnates

Delhi’s winter chill has also aggravated its air quality situation. Data recorded at 6 am showed the Air Quality Index (AQI) at 324, categorising the air as ‘very poor’, according to the CPCB’s Sameer platform.

Some areas reported especially worrying pollution levels:

Anand Vihar: 394

Bawana: 377

Narela: 363

Jahangirpuri: 367

Burari Crossing: 300

IGI Airport: 270

Lodi Road: 252

Experts explain that weak wind circulation and elevated humidity are allowing pollutants to accumulate near ground level, worsening breathing conditions.

Precautionary Measures Advised

With cold conditions expected to persist, officials have advised residents to avoid prolonged exposure during early mornings and late nights. Extra care is recommended for senior citizens, children, and those with respiratory or cardiac issues, along with adequate winter protection and reduced outdoor activity.
