In a significant and transformative moment for Delhi’s political landscape, Atishi Marlena, known for her exceptional work in education and financial reforms, has become the city’s third woman Chief Minister. This transition comes after Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi’s long-standing leader and face of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), stepped aside to hand over the reins to Atishi. At 43, she now holds the title of Delhi’s eighth Chief Minister, marking a defining moment in her career and the state’s political history.

When Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena met with Kejriwal at Raj Niwas to receive his resignation, along with his loyal ministers Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Imran Hussain, the change in power was formally announced. Atishi will hold the office of Chief Minister for a transitional period of five months until the elections in February 2025, during which time she will make sure that Delhi continues with its ongoing development projects.

A Leader with Humility and Determination

Atishi, known for her calm demeanour and sharp focus, humbly accepted this new responsibility, though she made it clear that her primary mission is to ensure the return of Arvind Kejriwal as Chief Minister. In her first public address as AAP’s legislative party leader, she boldly declared, “There is only one Chief Minister of Delhi, and that is Arvind Kejriwal,” showcasing her unwavering loyalty and commitment to the man who gave her a platform to rise in politics.

Her rise, however, has been far from ordinary. Atishi’s journey began with her deep involvement in social work, alongside her husband, Praveen Singh, who shares her vision for societal upliftment. Their connection was rooted in their common goal of improving rural development and enhancing agricultural standards. With her education at St. Stephen’s College and Oxford, Atishi brought a global perspective to the local challenges faced by Delhi.

From Social Work to Chief Minister

Atishi’s marriage to Praveen Singh in 2006 in Banaras was not just a personal union but also a partnership grounded in social work. Before diving into Delhi’s political scene, Kashi (Varanasi) was her home, where she and Praveen devoted their time to grassroots causes, working for rural upliftment and improving social conditions. Praveen, a social worker with an IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad background shared her passion for making a difference, and together they worked for the betterment of marginalised communities.

Her leap into politics under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal in 2019 brought her to the forefront, where she quickly became a key player in shaping Delhi’s education and health policies. “I want to thank my guru, Delhi’s beloved Arvind Kejriwal, for entrusting me with this responsibility,” Atishi said in her heartfelt speech, reflecting on how Kejriwal took a chance on her despite her being new to electoral politics.

A New Role, Same Vision

Now as Chief Minister, Atishi faces new challenges but remains resolute in her commitment to Delhi’s citizens. She emphasised the importance of continuing the essential services that have become synonymous with AAP’s governance – free electricity, quality healthcare, and accessible education – all while preparing for the 2025 elections.

Her leadership is not just about managing the day-to-day operations of the state but ensuring that the values and principles Kejriwal and AAP stand for continue to flourish. Atishi’s mission is clear: secure Arvind Kejriwal’s return as Chief Minister. “Don’t congratulate me. Congratulate me when Arvind Kejriwal is back as CM,” she urged her words resonating with both her colleagues and the public.

Looking Ahead

Atishi’s appointment marks a pivotal shift in Delhi’s governance. Her intellect, calmness under pressure, and dedication to public service make her a fitting leader to take on the mantle, even if temporarily. For Atishi, this new chapter is not about individual accolades but about maintaining the progress made by AAP and ensuring that Delhi’s people continue to benefit from the policies Kejriwal set in motion.

Her story, from the lanes of Varanasi to the highest political office in Delhi, is one of determination, grit, and above all, loyalty. As the state gears up for the next election, Delhi watches closely as Atishi navigates these crucial months with the hope of continuing the legacy of her mentor and guide, Arvind Kejriwal.
