Alyssa Milano is letting go of the past. Despite their years-long feud, Alyssa Milano pays tribute to late ‘Charmed’ co-star Shannen Doherty, who passed away on July 13. “It’s no secret that Shannen and I had a complicated relationship, but at its core was someone I deeply respected and was in awe of,” Milano told Entertainment Weekly. “She was a talented actress, beloved by many, and the world is less without her. My condolences to all who loved her.”
Shannen Doherty’s passing comes after a nearly decade-long battle with breast cancer. Though she went into remission in 2017 following a 2015 diagnosis, her cancer returned in 2020. In June 2023, the Beverly Hills, 90210 star shared the cancer had metastasized to her brain and later spread to her bones. “On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” her publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement to NBC News. “The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones and her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy now so they can grieve in peace.”
Throughout her health journey, Doherty continued to work and stay busy, which included hosting her podcast “Let’s Be Clear.” It was on a December episode that her feud with Alyssa Milano was reignited after ‘Charmed’ co-star Holly Marie Combs claimed Milano had Doherty fired from the series after season three. However, Alyssa Milano denied the accusations. “I did not have the power to get anyone fired,” she wrote on Instagram in February. “Once Shannen left we had five more successful seasons and I am forever grateful.”
Later in the month, Alyssa Milano struck a more contemplative tone. At MegaCon Orlando, she expressed her sadness that “a show that brought so much joy to fans for years has been overshadowed by negativity, even after all this time.” Milano acknowledged the difficulty of moving on but emphasized the shared disappointment of not celebrating the show’s positive impact.
Alyssa Milano has never concealed anything from us. “I’ve, I think, been very upfront and taken accountability for and apologized for whatever part I played in the situation and I’ve been very forthcoming about that,” she said. “I’m not even sure if I could expose myself farther than I already am in an attempt to make things right. It’s devastating. It’s challenging. This is the awkward portion that I wish had been altered. We apologize to everyone who still loves us despite this.
Shannen Doherty, however, wasn’t swayed by Alyssa Milano’s comments. Battling a serious illness, Doherty believed it crucial to share her truth “as opposed to the narrative that others put out there,” she said at MegaCon. “We all have our stories,” she added, emphasizing her perspective.
Tragically, Shannen Doherty passed away. Following this news, Alyssa Milano paid tribute to her former co-star, acknowledging their complicated past but honoring Doherty’s talent and the impact she had. This gesture showed Milano setting aside past differences to remember a beloved actress whose legacy will continue to inspire.
