Pune, Maharashtra – June 2025

In a heartbreaking incident that unfolded on Sunday afternoon, a 30-year-old bridge spanning the Indrayani River in Talegaon, Pune, collapsed amid torrential rainfall, claiming the lives of four people and injuring 51 others. The tragedy struck as nearly 125 tourists had gathered on the bridge to witness the river in spate.
The collapse sent dozens plunging into the swirling waters below, prompting immediate rescue efforts by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), local police, and district authorities.
What Went Wrong?
Initial investigations indicate that the bridge, which had already been declared unsafe for vehicular traffic, succumbed to the excessive load of visitors. Tourists had crowded the bridge to experience the monsoon-swollen Indrayani, despite warnings and restrictions.
According to NCP MLA Sunil Shelke, the bridge was originally constructed three decades ago for local farmers’ use, not to bear the weight of hundreds of pedestrians and vehicles. “Despite periodic repairs and restrictions, crowds kept coming. This overburdening led to its collapse,” Shelke said.
Swift Response and Rescue
Emergency teams acted quickly. The NDRF deployed units stationed nearby, who arrived on site within minutes and began pulling survivors from the water. The injured have been taken to multiple hospitals across Pune for treatment.
Government Reactions and Relief Measures
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the incident and announced ₹5 lakh in compensation to the families of those who lost their lives. He also assured that the state will cover medical expenses for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an international visit to Cyprus, personally called CM Fadnavis to inquire about the situation and ongoing rescue operations. According to ANI, the PM is closely monitoring developments.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah posted on X (formerly Twitter), praising the NDRF for their timely response and mourning the loss of life. “Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The NDRF’s quick action saved many lives,” he wrote.
Call for Accountability
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the administration, calling the collapse a preventable disaster. “This is not just a tragedy — it’s an avoidable one,” Kharge posted on social media. He demanded a thorough investigation and accountability from those responsible.
A Wake-Up Call for Infrastructure Oversight
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of maintaining public infrastructure and enforcing safety regulations. Experts and citizens alike are urging the government to take stringent measures to prevent such disasters in the future.
