International Labour Day 2025: Honouring the Hands That Build Our World

002 11

International Labor Day, which reminds us of the sacrifices, hardships, and aspirations of the working class, is observed on May 1st each year, marking a global stop to honor the unwavering spirit of workers. As the globe continues to deal with changes in the economy, technology, and nature of employment, the significance of this day feels even more profound in 2025.

The origins of Labour Day can be traced to the American labour union movement in the late 19th century, when workers called for safer working conditions, fair pay, and appropriate working hours. A global icon of the struggle for workers’ rights is the Haymarket Affair in Chicago in 1886, where workers who were striking for an eight-hour workday were subjected to violence.

The eight-hour workday faced violence, became a symbol of the fight for workers’ rights across the globe.

Today, Labour Day is not just about remembering the past — it’s about honouring the dignity of work in all forms. From farmers to factory workers, teachers to healthcare workers, drivers to delivery personnel — it’s the collective effort of millions of hands that keeps the world moving forward.

This day also calls on governments, corporations, and communities to ensure that workers’ rights are protected, that fair wages are paid, and that dignity is never compromised. It reminds us to say “thank you” to those who often work behind the scenes.

As we celebrate Labour Day 2025, let’s promise to build a future where every worker feels seen, respected, and valued — not just today, but every day.
