Asteroid 2024 YR4 No Longer a Threat to Earth, But Could It Hit the Moon?

In a reassuring update, NASA has confirmed that asteroid 2024 YR4 no longer poses a significant risk to Earth. Initially, astronomers had warned of a small chance of impact, but after refining their calculations, the probability has dropped to just 0.28%. This is a significant decrease from the previous 3% estimate, bringing relief to those concerned about a potential collision.

However, while Earth is safe, scientists have turned their attention to the Moon. The latest data suggests a slight increase in the likelihood of an impact with our lunar companion, now estimated at 1%. Although this remains a low probability, it highlights the unpredictable nature of space objects and the importance of continuous observation.

Asteroid 2024 YR4, first discovered on December 27, 2024, at the El Sauce Observatory in Chile, measures between 40 and 90 meters in diameter. Initially thought to be on a collision course with Earth by December 2032, new calculations show it will safely bypass our planet.

NASA’s planetary defense team will keep monitoring the asteroid until April 2025, ensuring that any future trajectory changes are detected early. While no immediate danger looms, this event reminds us of the need for vigilance in tracking near-Earth objects.
