Pop music, which combined aspects of Western pop with Indian sensibilities, became a major cultural force in India in the 1980s. The well-known singer and performer Biddu Appaiah was one of the movement’s pioneers. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the introduction of disco music to India, a credit that goes to music producer and composer Biddu. His co-production on the 1981 album “Disco Deewane” with singer Nazia Hassan was a major turning point in Indian pop music. The record was a huge hit and popularized a new sound that fused Indian melodies with disco beats, setting the stage for the explosion of pop music in the nation.
As it started gaining popularity, largely influenced by Western pop trends with a unique Indian flavor, another great singer and pioneer, Bappi Lahiri, known for blending disco and pop elements with traditional Indian music, created a distinct sound that appealed to the masses. He produced numerous hit songs and albums that became anthems of the era. His success in the 1980s was significant. His fusion of Western beats with Indian melodies struck a chord with audiences, across the country. Some of his notable contributions include songs like “Jimmy Jimmy,” “Disco Dancer,” and “Yaad Aa Raha Hai.”
Apart from Bappi Lahiri, other artists also contributed to the success of pop music in India during the 1980s. Nazia Hassan and Zoheb Hassan were Pakistani siblings who made a significant impression on Indian pop music with their album “Disco Deewane.” The title track became immensely popular and helped introduce a new style of music to Indian audiences.
Another prominent figure in Indian pop music during the 1980s was Alisha Chinai. She gained fame with her hit song “Made in India” in the 1990s but started her career in the late 1980s with songs like “Ek Chidiya, Anek Chidiyan.”
These artists, along with other artists played a vital role in shaping the landscape of pop music in India during the 1980s. Their innovative sounds, catchy tunes, and fusion of musical styles laid the foundation for the pop music scene that followed in the subsequent decades.
